Age hardening is a process by which soft or low carbon steels increase their hardness and tensile strength. Age hardening involves slow, gradual changes that take place at normal temperatures, following heat treatment. As hardness and strength increase, ductility generally decreases.
Annealing is a heating and cooling process that is used to:
soften steel to improve ductility and/or machinability
remove internal stresses resulting from previous treatment (rolling, cooling, forging)
modify grain structure
The temperature and rate of cooling will depend on the type of metal being treated and the reason for the treatment. Thermex’s fully experienced metallurgical engineers will recommend an annealing process to meet your specific needs.
Other services provided by Thermex include:
stress relieving
glass bead or shot blasting
ferrous metal microstructure analysis
prototype testing & assessment
